The Kinetic Theory Apparatus is designed to replicate the behaviour of a gas. In this setup, a collection of small metal spheres is placed within a slender vertical chamber, resting on a rubber-faced plate forming the bottom surface.
Then, a lightweight cylindrical styrene foam float with a stiff paper underside is introduced above the spheres within the tube. To vividly mimic the molecules of a gas, an electric motor drives the plate rapidly and vigorously up and down, causing the spheres to be agitated and propelled into the chamber.
